Historic grocery open for inspection

By The Quad-City Times | Friday, December 01, 2006
An 1868 grocery store that a nonprofit group is restoring into an architectural salvage store-neighborhood museum will be open for inspection from 3-8 p.m. today and 2-6:30 p.m. Sunday, in conjunction with a tour of homes in Davenport’s historic Gold Coast neighborhood.

“Please stop by — rain, snow or storms —  and check out our progress,” says Jack Haberman, a neighborhood resident and a founder of the Gateway Redevelopment Group.

The former Jipp grocery at 732 Gaines St. had most recently been a laundry and was in a highly dilapidated state when the group took it over.

The group has spent about $85,000 so far to stabilize the building, but needs about $12,000 more to finish. Still, much progress has been made, and there already is a lot of beautiful salvage inside, including stair railings, tin ceilings, oak flooring and doors.

The home tour, with four homes, will be the same hours that the Jipp is open.

The Gold Coast is generally defined as that area between 5th, 9th, Ripley and Vine streets. For more information, visit www.davenportgoldcoast.com.
